Companies that store and distribute food and other perishable products must go through programs and implement procedures that most warehouses may overlook. Being coined as a Food Grade Warehouse starts with becoming certified. One of the most important certifications is awarded by the American Institute of Bakers (AIB) International. The AIB provides audits and educational opportunities for maintaining food grade status.

Not all food products need to be temperature controlled. Dry storage warehouses can be ambient whereas frozen and refrigerated (30-39 degrees F) items need to be in temperature controlled environments.
Building and Land Maintenance
There are several areas of a food grade facility that should be maintained in order to pass a certification program. The warehouse should be sealed and the building should be free of openings from cracks in walls, damaged dock doors, leaky roofs and broken pipes. Furthermore, a pest control management system must be integrated and the surrounding landscaping kept in good condition.
There must be a system in place to manage inventory, including managing perishable inventory on a first in first out basis.
Systems and Procedures
A food grade auditor will very likely want to see systems and procedures the company has in place to keep the facility maintained and team members trained in proper food handling techniques.
